Viscose is a popular choice among dressmakers for its soft, fluid drape and breathable, almost silk-like feel at a more accessible price point. Also known as rayon, viscose belongs to the family of regenerated cellulose fibres, made from natural wood pulp and processed to create a fabric that is soft, absorbent and beautifully fluid to sew with. Related fibres such as modal and bamboo viscose share this same cellulose base, offering the same breathable comfort with subtle differences in drape and sheen.

The natural cellulose structure gives viscose its comfortable, breathable handle, working particularly well in warmer weather, while still offering enough body to hold its shape in flowing silhouettes. Viscose, rayon and modal fabrics do require a little extra care when sewing due to their softness and tendency to shift, and our team is always happy to offer tips on cutting and handling if you are working with these fibres for the first time.
