Fabric Certifications: What They Mean & Why They Matter

At Fabulous Fabrics, we know our customers care deeply about quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability. The textile industry has made great progress in recent years, and a growing number of fabrics now carry internationally recognised certifications. These labels provide peace of mind and clear information about the origins, processes, and environmental impact of certain fabrics.
While not every fabric in our collection holds a formal certification, we believe it’s important to highlight the credentials you may see across our ranges — and to explain what they mean for you as a maker.
Key Fabric Certifications in Our Range
Oeko-Tex® Standard 100

One of the most recognised textile certifications worldwide, Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 ensures that fabrics are tested and verified to be free from harmful substances. Fabrics with this certification meet strict safety criteria and are safe for direct skin contact — an important reassurance for everyday wear.
From cotton jersey to lightweight wovens, Oeko-Tex® certified fabrics give you confidence that your sewing projects are made from textiles that are skin-friendly, safe, and reliable.
FSC® Certified Fabrics

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification applies to fibres that originate from responsibly managed forests. FSC® certified fabrics, such as some of our viscose bases, help protect biodiversity, indigenous communities, and forest ecosystems while ensuring traceability through the supply chain.
When you choose FSC fabrics, you’re supporting textiles that are both beautiful and environmentally responsible.
Lenzing™ EcoVero™ Sustainable Viscose

EcoVero™ is a sustainable viscose fibre developed by Lenzing. It is derived from certified renewable wood sources using an eco-responsible production process that generates up to 50% lower emissions and water impact than conventional viscose.
EcoVero™ carries both EU Ecolabel and FSC/PEFC certifications, making it a strong choice for environmentally conscious makers. With its soft drape, smooth finish, and reduced footprint, EcoVero™ is perfect for sewing dresses, blouses, and flowy trousers that combine style with sustainability.
Certified European Flax® / Masters of Flax®

Few fabrics can rival linen for its natural beauty, durability, and timeless appeal. When linen carries the Certified European Flax® label or as it is now recently been renamed Masters of Flax®, it guarantees the fibre is of European origin, cultivated without irrigation, GMOs, or waste. It also ensures full traceability, from field to yarn to fabric, supporting both the environment and Europe’s heritage of flax craftsmanship.
Why European Linen Is Sustainable
Low-impact cultivation: flax requires no additional irrigation.
Durable & long-lasting: linen garments wear beautifully for years.
Biodegradable & natural: a sustainable choice for conscious makers.

Why Aren’t All Fabrics Certified?
It’s important to note that the majority of fabrics in the industry, particularly from boutique mills and smaller suppliers, do not carry formal certifications. Certification is an expensive and time-intensive process, often beyond the reach of artisanal or family-run producers.
That does not mean these fabrics are unethical or environmentally damaging. Many of our most beautiful textiles are made by small boutique mills with generations of expertise, using responsible practices that may never be formally “certified” but are deeply rooted in tradition, quality, and care for the environment.
Innovation in Digital Printing
Beyond certifications, the industry has made significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint through digital printing technology. Unlike traditional rotary or screen printing, digital printing uses far less water, dramatically reduces chemical waste, and allows for shorter production runs — meaning less overproduction and waste.
This innovation has transformed the way we source and create printed fabrics, enabling vibrant designs with a far lighter impact on the planet.
Our Commitment to Certified & Sustainable Fabrics
At Fabulous Fabrics, we believe in transparency, responsibility, and celebrating both certified innovations and the timeless skills of boutique mills. Whether certified or not, every fabric we bring into our collection is chosen for its quality, integrity, and ability to inspire makers.
Because if it’s worth making, isn’t it worth using fabulous fabric?
